Navigating NICU

Personal Profile

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Special Care Unit ca be a deeply traumatic time for families when their baby requires special treatment or is there for monitoring.

Unfortunately, the current model in the NICU that is set up does not support the mother infant dyad. Healthcare staff in NICU may also carry pathologizing attitudes and frequently police and child protection to make false reports against parents to take medical custody to absolve themselves of their informed consent obligations.

To navigate this system safely, we have created a comprehensive guideline as well as several forms in order to obtain informed consent, uphold breastfeeding and request proper meetings with the overseeing doctor. As well as how to navigate child protection.
