Presenters

Bashi, Alecia and Heather combine their skills to provide insight into how placing women and their human rights at the centre of their birth experience has long-lasting, positive effects for women, families and care providers.

The comprehensive Respectful Maternity Care education addressing:

• the Respectful Maternity Care Charter and implementation of respectful maternity care;

• informed consent and informed refusal;

• bodily autonomy and women's right to decline recommended care;

• trauma-informed maternity care and birth trauma;

• obstetric violence, mistreatment and coercion;

• case studies and women's lived experiences of maternity services;

• communication and shared decision-making; and

• reflective practice and organisational approaches to improving respectful care.

Better Births through Communication 

Better Births through Communication Consent is the 2nd workshop of our respectful maternity care training series. 

It is a 3 hour workshop designed to ensure you can make a meaningful difference working with women in the maternity space through your communication. 

This workshop gives maternity care providers the most up-to-date information on the laws and human rights that govern their practice, increases professional knowledge about effective trauma-informed communication, and aims to reduce birth trauma.


Better Births through Consent covers:

  • Giving communication women want 

  • Giving that communication within the legal context 

  • Giving communication that enable women to feel strong, informed and confident

Guidelines for the Prevention of Perinatal Trauma is the 3rd workshop of our respectful maternity care training series. It’s time to CARE: Consent, Autonomy, Respect Every Woman, Everywhere, Every Time

It is a 3 hour workshop that presents a much-needed opportunity for all maternity care professionals to change their practice to enable every woman to experience maternity care that could be less likely to cause them trauma – physiological and/or psychological.

The purpose of this guideline and training are to promote unconditional respect for and observance of every woman’s rights and fundamental freedoms to ensure that no woman is ever subjected to torture, or to cruel inhumane or degrading maternity care, nor punishment or prejudice, nor threats or intimidation, nor lies or deception.

Topics covered:

  • Human rights treaties relevant to the maternity space

  • coercive control 

  • informed decision making (consent with care)

  • upholding a woman's autonomy

  • respect for women, their decisions, their baby 

  • culturally appropriate care
